China will curb coal consumption under its 2018-2020 pollution plan

The Chinese State Council aims at cutting coal consumption and prop out electric vehicles sales even further as part of its 2018-2020 pollution plan, which will expand to 82 Chinese cities and in particular in the coal-producing provinces of Shaanxi and Shanxi.

The concerned regions include the Henan province (central China) and the regions of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, which will all be required to cut coal consumption by 10% until 2020 (compared to 2016), while the Yangtze delta will have to reduce coal consumption by 5%. The government also plans to raise the domestic gas storage capacity to cope with the decrease in coal use and to make sure supplies will be sufficient during the next winter.

Besides, it aims at reducing road emissions and has set a production and sales target for new energy (electric) vehicles at around 2 million vehicles per year by 2020.
