The Bulgarian state-owned gas supply company Bulgargaz has entered into an agreement with the Turkish energy group Botas to import up to 1.5 bcm/year of LNG via Turkey’s gas network and LNG imports terminal for a period of 13 years.
Bulgaria intends to import LNG from European and US producers. The country is seeking to secure natural gas supply for the coming winter after Russia halted its gas supplies in April 2022 over the country’s refusal to pay in rubles amid European sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. Bulgaria already uses the busy Revithoussa LNG terminal in Greece and needs to increase its import capacity until the commissioning of the Alexandroupoli floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Greece in 2024, for which it has signed a tolling agreement.
