The National Electric Energy Agency of Brazil, ANEEL, has announced the results of two power generation auctions, A-4 for projects to be commissioned by 1 January 2021 and A-6 for projects to be commissioned by 1 January 2023.
In the A-4 auction, the ANEEL awarded a total of BRL 5.6bn (US$1.7bn) of contracts to 25 power projects totalling 675 MW and expected to generate 39.1 TWh of electricity: most of the projects (20) are solar PV plants with a combined capacity of 574 MW and an average price of BRL145.68/MWh (US$44.1/MWh). The final average price stood at BRL 144.51/MWh (US$43.7/MWh), a 54.65% discount on the established prices.
In the A-6 auction, the ANEEL awarded a total of BRL108bn (US$32.6bn) in contracts to 63 power projects totalling 3,842 MW, enough to generate 572.5 TWh/year. The average price at the end of the negotiations was BRL189.45/MWh (US$57.3/MWh), i.e. a 38.7% discount on established prices. Most of the projects were wind parks (49 projects, totalling 1,387 MW), but two large gas-fired power projects were also selected (466 MW Vale Azul II and 1,673 MW Porto do Açu III developed by Prumo Logistica), along with 6 small hydropower plants (139 MW) and 6 biomass-fired plants (177 MW).
Contracts awarded through the auction range between 20 years for biomass, wind and solar plants, 25 years for thermal power plants and 30 years for hydropower plants.
