The Doel 2 nuclear reactor in Flanders (Belgium) was definitively shut down on 30 November 2025 after 50 years of operation (RTBF, 30/11/2025). The power plant that started operations in December 1975 has entered its decommissioning phase in preparation for its dismantling.
Its closure is in line with Belgium's nuclear phase-out policy (2003), under which four other reactors have already been shut down. The Doel 1 and 2 were scheduled to be taken out of service in 2015 but their lifetime was extended and Doel 1 closed in February 2025. Doel 3 shut down in September 2022 and Tihange 2 in January 2023 . The country’s remaining reactors, the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 will continue in service until 2035.
