Australia's electricity consumption will slightly increase until 2017

According to the latest forecast from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), electricity consumption in the National Electricity Market (NEM) of Australia is forecast to slightly increase over the next three years (+0.4%/year). Excluding LNG projects in Queensland, the overall NEM electricity consumption is expected to drop by an average 1.1%/year until 2016-2017, reflecting a 3%/year decrease in large industrial consumption. Queensland is the only NEM region with a rising electricity consumption, induced by LNG projects: electricity demand from large industrial consumers is expected to rise by 16.4%/year, raising power demand in Queensland to 4.1%/year. Residential and commercial electricity consumption is expected to contract over the next three years, due to energy efficiency savings (and higher electricity prices) and to a steady growth in solar PV installations, which is expected to continue (+24%/year) even if government financial incentives remain static. In 2013-14, rooftop PV results in a 2.9% reduction in consumption from the grid.
