The Government of Australia has announced measures to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices following the conflict in the Middle East. The petrol and diesel excise will be halved for three months, reducing prices by AUD26.3c/l (USD18c/l) (Prime Minister of Australia press release, 30/03/2026). In addition, the Heavy Vehicle Road User Charge will be reduced to zero for three months, with the next scheduled increase deferred by six months to support the logistics sector.
In addition, the country has released 20% of Australia’s petrol and diesel reserves, specifically targeting regional areas to prevent localised shortages. Fuel and diesel standards have been temporarily modified to allow domestic refineries to maximise output and increase overall flow.
