Argentina extends Atucha II nuclear reactor operating licence until 2036

The Argentinian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ARN) has granted Nucleoeléctrica Argentina the renewal of the operating license for the Atucha II Nuclear Power Plant for a period of ten years, enabling its operation until 26 May 2036 (Nucleoeléctrica press release, 21/05/2026). 

Atucha II is one of the three nuclear power plants operated by Nucleoeléctrica. The plant, with a capacity of 745 MW was commissioned in 2014. Construction started in 1981, but was halted in 1994. It resumed only in 2007. The country has 3 reactors with a capacity of 1.8 GW, accounting for 4% of Argentina’s installed capacity. They represented 7% of the country’s power mix in 2024.
