Ansaldo Energia has been selected to supply four of its advanced AE94.3A gas turbines for the new Al Dhafra power plant, developed by TAQA in the Abu Dhabi emirate (United Arab Emirates). The power plant, with a total installed capacity of 1 GW, is scheduled to commence operations by May 2027. The Al Dhafra power plant will be complemented by one of the world's largest photovoltaic parks. In addition to the gas turbines, Ansaldo Energia will provide the associated generators and will manage the installation and commissioning activities. The agreement also includes a Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA), ensuring ongoing monitoring and technical support for the plant's operations.
In April 2025, TAQA hadsigned a 24-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) to build, own, and operate the 1 GW Al Dhafra Open-Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) project. The project will add to the recently announced world-first ‘round-the-clock’ giga-scale project by EWEC and Masdar, which comprises 5.2 GW of solar PV and 19 GWh of battery storage to dispatch 1 GW of renewable energy 24 hours a day seven days a week.
