The US energy company AES Andes has decided to cancel its US$10bn INNA green hydrogen and green ammonia production project in the Antofagasta Region in northern Chile, aligning with the guidelines of its parent company in the United States and choosing to focus on the development and construction of its renewable energy and energy storage portfolio in Chile.
The group had submitted an Environmental Assessment (EA) to the relevant Chilean authorities for the project in January 2025 and had entered into discussions with Samsung C&T, a major Korean company, to jointly evaluate the opportunities to produce green hydrogen for domestic consumption or for export to international markets.
Since the launch of its transformational Greentegra strategy in 2018, AES Andes has added a total of 2,181 MW of renewable generation and battery storage capacity in Chile. The company aims to commission the Andes Solar III and Bolero BESS plants in the first half of 2026 and to continue construction on four new renewable projects: Arenales, Cristales, Pampas, and Atacama BESS, which will add a cumulated 2,363 MW by 2027, raising AES Andes' capacity in Chile to around 4.5 GW in 2027.
