NV Energy will replace 257MW coal-fired unit with 100MW PV plant (US)

US power utility NV Energy has submitted plans to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada for a 100 MW solar PV project in Boulder City, Nevada (United States) and for the early closure of the existing 257 MW coal-fired unit at the Reid Gardner power plant. This unit, the last of four blocks, would be retired on 28 February 2017 instead of 31 December 2017.

The company retired the first three generating units (110 MW each) at Reid Gardner at the end of 2014 and is also exiting its participation in Arizona's Navajo Generating Station by the end of 2019. The new solar energy project is the result of a Request for Proposals that was issued earlier in 2016. NV Energy has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Techren Solar to build a 100 MW single-axis solar photovoltaic project in Eldorado Valley. The project is in the development phase and, subject to regulatory approval, is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2018.
