According to preliminary statistics released by the Belgian energy regulator CREG, power generation in the Elia transmission zone in Belgium declined by 8.3%, mainly due to a 23% fall in nuclear power generation. Gas-fired generation rose by nearly 11%, while coal-fired power generation contracted by 4.5%. Where renewable generation is concerned, wind production rose by 14%, while solar generation increased by 7.1%. Electricity imports neared 21 TWh in 2015; since 2012, higher electricity imports have offset the decline in nuclear power generation. The day-ahead price in Belgium averaged €44.7/MWh, i.e. +9.5% compared to 2014, due to limited importation capacity in September and October 2015 and to low nuclear availability during the year. The year ahead price declined from €46.9/MWh in 2014 to €43.4/MWh in 2015.
In 2015, gas consumption increased by 10% due to higher heating needs (+16% over 2014 that was a very mild year) and cheaper gas prices. In 2015, Belgium imported 26.5 TWh of LNG, 153 TWh of gas from Norway, 120 TWh from the Netherlands and 82 TWh from the United Kingdom; it exported 187 TWh to France and 14 TWh to Germany. LNG imports at Zeebrugge recovered from a 3-year low. Day-ahead and year-ahead gas prices averaged €20/MWh in 2015.
