ZE PAK and Synthos plan to develop up to 6 nuclear SMRs (1.8 GW) in Poland

The Polish energy group ZE PAK has signed an investment agreement with the chemicals company Synthos to build a nuclear power plant at the site of ZE PAK’s Pątnów coal-fired power plant in central Poland. Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies intend to establish a joint venture to explore the construction of four to six BWRX-300 small modular reactors (SMRs). Synthos has exclusive rights in Poland for GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy's (GEH's) small nuclear reactors and will participate in the project as both an investor and the technology provider.

This SMR is a 300 MWe water-cooled, natural circulation SMR with passive safety systems, and is based on GEH's US-licensed, 1520 MWe Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor design. In 2019, Synthos signed a cooperation agreement with GEH for the construction of a SMR in Poland and the group completed a feasibility study for the implementation of a fleet of SMRs in December 2020.

ZE PAK owns and operates three lignite-fired power plants in Poland with a total capacity of 1.1 GW and produced 4.9 TWh in 2020. The group plans to end coal-fired power generation by 2030.
