Zambia signs PPA for a 100 MW hybrid wind and solar project

A power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed between China’s DZGM Energy Resources and Zambia’s state-owned Zesco for the development of a 100 MW hybrid wind and solar project, expected to take shape within 6 months (Zambian Ministry of Energy press release, 28/03/2026). “DZGM said the investment responds to the Presidential call for increased private sector participation in the energy sector, reaffirming its commitment to timely delivery in partnership with Zesco”, according to the government’s statement.

In Zambia, the power system still relies heavily on hydropower, which accounts for more than 80% of electricity generation, according to data from the National Energy Compact for Zambia (Ecofin Agency, 30/03/2026). The authorities are multiplying solar projects to strengthen generation capacity, accelerate diversification, and improve energy security. In September 2025, Zambian companies Africa GreenCo and Serenje Energy signed a preliminary agreement for a power purchase contract related to the 25 MW Lusanje solar plant. At the end of January 2026, the 20 MW solar project of the Natural Resources Development College (NRDC) (Zambian public institution) in Lusaka was inaugurated. In February, the Ministry of Energy subsequently signed an implementation agreement with China’s Goldenray Energy for the development of a 118 MWp solar plant in Sinazongwe, in the Southern Province.
