Zambia signs deal with Chinese firms to develop up to 1 GW of solar

Zambia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China-based companies LONGi Solar Technology and Sino Green Technology to develop solar power projects across the country, targeting a combined capacity of up to 1 GW (Renewables Now, 27/01/2026)

The pilot project under the agreement is a 100 MW solar park in Itezhi-Tezhi District, with construction scheduled to begin in April 2026. Additional solar plants are planned nationwide under the framework of the MoU, with each project expected to be completed within eight to ten months.

The Ministry of Energy noted that the agreement follows the Zambian President’s 2025 visit to China, which helped strengthen cooperation between Zambia and Chinese renewable energy companies. The Ministry also highlighted that Zambia imported 500 MW of Chinese solar panels in 2025, including 300 MW manufactured by LONGi Solar, underscoring the company’s growing role in the country’s energy sector.
