The Zambian government has secured contractors to deploy 312 MW of new solar capacity across its 156 constituencies (Zambian government press release, 01/06/2026). According to the announcement, the country launched a large-scale decentralized program that has awarded contracts for the construction of 2 MW solar power plants in each of its constituencies. The Presidential Constituency Energy Initiative (PCEI) represents a governmental investment of USD232m.
According to the Zambian Ministry of Local Government Permanent Secretary, the initiative is aligned with the government’s aim to invest in renewable energy infrastructure to enhance national energy security through decentralised power generation.
