Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation (YEC) has submitted an application for environmental approval for the Baru-Marnda Renewable Energy Project, a large-scale renewable energy complex south of Karratha, Western Australia. The project site is expected to host up to 1 GW of wind turbines and 500 MW of solar PV, with the optional addition of a BESS, the size of which has not yet been disclosed. The complex is planned for development in the western Pilbara region, on land where the Yindjibarndi people—a First Nations group—hold native title rights and interests. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, pending necessary regulatory approvals, and to be conducted in phases over 3 to 6 years.
YEC is a joint venture between the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation (YAC) and ACEN Corp, the listed energy platform of the Philippine Ayala Group. Established in 2023, YEC aims to deploy up to 3 GW of wind, solar, and battery storage capacity.
Australia is targeting 82% renewable electricity generation by 2030. As of the end of 2023, the country had 34 GW of installed solar capacity and approximately 11 GW of wind capacity.
