The Norwegian chemical company Yara has officially inaugurated an industrial carbon capture facility at its ammonia and fertiliser plant in Sluiskil, in the Netherlands (Yara press release, 07/09/2026). It can capture and liquefy up to 0.8 MtCO2/year from ammonia production, thereby avoiding carbon taxation on these volumes. The CO₂ will be transported by ship to Norway, where it will be permanently stored beneath the seabed by Northern Lights. Yara's Sluiskil plant is expected to capture and store around 12 MtCO2 over the next 15 years.
Northern Lights is a CO2 transport and storage project jointly owned by Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies. The initial phase, which is fully contracted, can store up to 1.5 MtCO2/year in a reservoir under the seabed in the Norwegian North Sea. First injection took place in August 2025. The Norwegian government covered about 80% of the cost of Phase 1. The second phase of the project, for which a final investment decision (FID) was taken in March 2025, aims to reach a storage capacity of at least 5 MtCO2/year by 2028.
