Xlinks could seek CfD support for its HVDC link between Morocco and the UK

The British company Xlinks has entered discussions with the UK government about possible Contract for Difference (CfD) support for its proposed 3,800 km-long HVDC subsea power line project between Morocco and the United Kingdom. Xlinks estimates that the project could get £48/MWh (€57/MWh) for 25 years under the current CfD mechanism. The entire project, estimated at US$22bn, includes the development of about 10.5 GW of wind and solar capacity in the region of Guelmim-Oued Noun (Morocco), a 5 GW/20 GWh battery and two 1.8 GW interconnection cables; the 3.6 GW interconnector would go round the coasts of Portugal, Spain and France before reaching the United Kingdom at Alverdiscott in Devon. The first cable would be laid in 2025 and commissioned in 2027. The three other cables would be commissioned in 2029.
