Xcel (US) plans to extend the life of Monticello nuclear plant by 20 years

Northern States Power Company, a unit of the US energy group Xcel Energy, has asked the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to extend the operating licence of its 671 MW Monticello nuclear reactor, located in Monticello, Minnesota (United States), by 20 years.

The Monticello nuclear plant is currently authorised to run until September 2030. The NRC will hold a public meeting on 22 March 2023 in Monticello on the environmental review process for the extension application.

The reactor in Monticello, located about 60 km northwest of Minneapolis, was commissioned in 1971 and has already been granted a first 20-year extension. In 2013, the NRC also approved Xcel Energy’s application to increase output from 600 MW to 671 MW.

Nuclear accounted for 19% of the US' total power generation in 2021. There are 92 nuclear reactors currently in operation in the country, for a total capacity of about 99 GW (2022).
