Xcel successfully converts its 1 GW Harrington Station from coal to gas (US)

The US energy group Xcel Energy has completed the conversion of its 1,018 MW Harrington Station in Texas (United States) from coal to natural gas. The conversion was made in partnership with the State of Texas and is scheduled to be fully complete in May 2025. The company had explored various alternatives to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions at Harrington, determining that the conversion to natural gas was the best cost-effective solution to keep the project operational and attain federal clean air standards.

Originally designed to burn both coal and natural gas, the Harrington Generating Station was Xcel Energy’s first coal-fired power plant in Texas, with Unit 1 starting operations in 1976. Units 2 and 3 were among the first to use baghouses to capture particulate matter from coal combustion. Xcel Energy provides the energy to homes and businesses across eight Western and Midwestern states in the United States.
