Xcel Energy raises US wind project additions by 1.8 GW to 3.3 GW

The US-based company Xcel Energy has announced plans to develop four new wind parks totalling 1.8 GW in three states, on top of a US$2.5bn investment in seven wind parks adding 1.55 GW in several US Northern states (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa) announced earlier in March 2017.

The 4 new sites will be located in Colorado (Rush Creek) and in the Southwest region (Sagamore Wind in New Mexico, Hale Wind and Bonita in Texas).

Colorado:

- The Rush Creek 600 MW wind farm project will begin construction in spring 2017 and is located in Cheyenne, Kit Carson and Lincole counties.

Southwest:

- The Sagamore Wind 500 MW project in Roosevelt Country (New Mexico)

- The Hale Wind 478 MW project in Hale County (Texas)

- The Bonita 230 MW PPA in COchran and Crosby Counties (Texas)

These 11 projects are currently in different stages of regulatory approval and encompass both wind farms and power purchase agreements (PPA). They will add 3,380 MW and are expected to increase the share of wind projects in its energy mix, which will reach around 35% by 2021.
