The US power utility Xcel Energy has received approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (United States) for its plan to reduce CO2 emissions from electricity provided to its Upper Midwest customers by more than 85% by 2030. To reach this target, the company intends to build 2,150 MW of new wind and 2,500 MW of new solar capacity by 2032; it also plans an additional approximately 1,100 MW of renewable beyond 2032. In addition, Xcel Energy aims to extend the lifetime of the 2,004 MW Monticello nuclear power plant in Minnesota by an additional 10 years to 2040, and to retire all its Upper Midwest coal-fired power plants by 2030. The group will also promote energy efficiency and load management and will build new power transmission infrastructures.
Xcel Energy’s Upper Midwest system supplies customers in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Xcel Energy's plan needs to secure approval from public utilities commission in other states. In 2020, coal accounted for 21% of the company's power mix. Xcel Energy owns and operates 6,500 MW of coal-fired plants; only the Tolk coal-fired plant (1,067 MW) in Texas is scheduled to be decommissioned after 2030.
