American Electric Power (AEP), through its subsidiary Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), has signed a joint development agreement with X-energy and a funding agreement with Amazon to evaluate the feasibility of a 960 MW advanced nuclear project in Indiana, United States (AEP press release, 19/10/2026). The project would consist of 12 X-energy Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMRs) of 80 MW each, arranged in groups of four. The Xe-100 is a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor using helium coolant and TRISO fuel.
Amazon will provide milestone-based development funding and a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Amazon is planned to cover the facility’s costs and operations over the contract term.
The project would be located at the former I&M Breed Generating Station, an AEP-owned coal plant site in Sullivan County, which recently joined Indiana’s Advanced Nuclear Ready Communities Program.
It may represent the second commercial deployment under the X-energy and Amazon collaboration, which targets more than 5 GW of new nuclear capacity on the US grid by 2039. The first is Energy Northwest’s Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington State.
