Woodside withdraws from the 18 Mt/year Kitimat LNG project in Canada

The Australian oil and gas group Woodside has decided to withdraw from the proposed Kitimat LNG project in British Columbia (western Canada), in which it held a 50% non-operated interest. The group will divest or wind up assets and agreements related to the proposed gas liquefaction project, its site and the related 480 km long Pacific Trail Pipeline route. Woodside will retain a stake in the Liard Basin upstream gas resource and will now focus on higher value opportunities in Australia and Senegal.

The Kitimat LNG project was developed by Chevron and Woodside Energy and was expected to include up to three LNG trains rated 6 Mt/year (8.1 bcm/year) each. Chevron bought half of the LNG project from Encana and EOG Resources in December 2012. As part of the same deal, Apache raised its participation in Kitimat LNG from 40% to 50%. In 2014, Woodside acquired Apache’s stake in the project. In December 2019, Chevron announced plans to sell its 50% stake in the project.
