Woodside begins construction of the 5Mt/year Pluto LNG train in Australia

Australian petroleum exploration and production company Woodside has begun construction of a second LNG train of a 5 Mt/year capacity at its Pluto LNG onshore facility (which will collect gas from the Scarborough gas field), located on the Burrup Peninsula, near Karratha, in the Australian state of Western Australia.

American corporation Bechtel will execute the engineering, procurement, and construction of Pluto Train 2. To continue to support Australia’s domestic market, additional domestic gas infrastructure will be installed with capacity of around 62.5 GWh/day. Initial earthworks in the laydown and storage areas are expected to begin before the end of 2022.

In April 2022, Woodside secured primary approval for the Scarborough gas project. The field is located about 375 km off the coast of Western Australia and is estimated to contain 11.1 tcf (314 bcm) of dry gas. Its gas production will be transported through a 430-km-long gas pipeline to the Pluto LNG terminal, where the second Pluto liquefaction train will be added.
