The American company Westinghouse Electric, a subsidiary of Toshiba, has published an update regarding the construction of the two VC Summer AP1000 nuclear reactors which are currently being built in South Carolina. The company has informed South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) that it expects additional completion costs for the two units which will amount US$1.5bn.
SCE&G started the construction of the two AP reactors rated 1,117 MW each on the site of the existing VC Summer-1 (971 MW net) that was commissioned in 1984. The construction started on both units in 2013 but in March 2015, SCE&G delayed by six months the completion of construction works. The completion of units 2 and 3 is now expected in 2019 and 2020.
SCE&G is a regulated public utility in charge of power generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to around 700,000 customers in South Carolina. The company also provides natural gas services to about 380,000 customers.
