The US government has signed an US$80bn deal with the US-based Westinghouse Electric Company to build large-scale (AP1000) nuclear reactors to support the growing electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence (Westinghouse press release, 28/10/2025).
- The partnership involves Westinghouse, Brookfield Asset Management (a subsidiary of Canada-based Brookfield Corporation), and Canadian uranium producer Cameco Corp.
- The deal follows the directives of the US Administration’s May 2025 executive orders, which aim to accelerate the development and deployment of nuclear reactors in the United States.
In July 2025, Westinghouse announced plans to open 10 new plants in the US, with construction starting in 2030 (Westinghouse press release, 30/07/2025). Currently, there are only two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors operating in the US (Units 3 and 4 at Plant Vogtle in Georgia).
