The US nuclear company Westinghouse has signed an agreement with Ukraine’s Energoatom and the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy on the purchase of equipment for the proposed Unit 5 of the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant, located near Rivne in western Ukraine. The upcoming AP-1000 unit will become the first western-built power unit in Ukraine and will add more than 1.1 GW of capacity to the Ukrainian grid. The go-ahead for the pilot AP-1000 project at Khelmnitsky was first signed in November 2021.
The parties discussed further collaboration in the years to come, with Energoatom planning for a total of nine AP-1000 reactors in the future, as well as Westinghouse-supplied fuel for its VVER reactors. Ukraine is also exploring the potential deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs).
Khmelnitsky's first reactor was connected to the grid in 1987, and the second in 2004. Units 3 and 4 remain unfinished. Ukraine possesses 15 nuclear reactors generating about half of its electricity, including the six at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since March 2022.
