Western Australia EPA withdraws GHG emissions guidelines (Australia)

The Western Australia Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has decided to withdraw its Green House Gas (GHG) emissions guidelines after consultation held with potentially impacted companies. The guidelines required major Western Australia resources projects over 100 ktCO2/year to completely offset their greenhouse gas emissions. The EPA has acknowledged the need to reduce the state's emissions, but it will reassess its guidelines either way. It intends to undertake further consultation in order to create a framework that would be practically implemented.

The Australian Prime Minister has announced an AUD2bn (US$1.4bn) package to ensure compliance with the country's 2030 emission targets. The package is an extension of the Direct Action fund set in 2014 and was renamed "Climate Solutions Fund". The Climate Solutions Fund includes different carbon abatement programs, from vegetation management to energy efficiency and transport. According to the Prime Minister, the goal is to reduce emissions by 26-28% by 2030, compared with 2005 levels.
