WAPDA secures financing for a 4.3 GW hydro project (Pakistan)

The Pakistan power utility Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has announced it secured PRup144bn (US$1.37bn) under a debt financing agreement for its 4,320 MW Dasu hydropower project (DHP-1) on the main Indus river, in the Kohsitan district of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region.

The local financing has been ensured by a consortium of major Pakistani and namely Habib Bank Limited. In addition, the World Bank will provide a credit of US$1bn. WAPDA will finance the remainder with its own resources and with the support of the Pakistani government.

The WAPDA project has been approved in June 2014. It will be developed in two stages, each consisting in land acquisition, resettlement, environmental and social management and involving the construction of six units (2,160 MW). The first stage is expected to be completed in 5 years and will cost US$4.2bn.

The project is located 240 km upstream of the 3,480 Tarbela facility and 74 downstream of the proposed Diamer Basha Dam location. The produced electricity will be transferred from Dasu to Islamabad via a double circuit 500 kV transmission line.
