Vopak reaches FID on a 200 MW/800 MWh BESS project in the Netherlands

Vopak has completed the acquisition of a majority stake in Dutch developer Green Energy Storage (GES) and has taken a final investment decision (FID) on a 200 MW/800 MWh BESS project in Oosterhout, the Netherlands (Vopak press release, 02/07/2026). The acquisition and the project represent an investment of EUR230m (USD263m).

The four-hour BESS is designed to connect to the high-voltage grid and support grid balancing and congestion management in the Dutch power system. Commercial operations are expected in the first half of 2028, with Greenchoice contracted as the offtaker for 50% of the capacity under an eight-year tolling agreement.

The investment forms part of Vopak’s strategy to expand into energy transition infrastructure, with GES providing a development platform and pipeline of large-scale storage projects in the Dutch market.
