Global commodity trader Vitol is supporting a consortium of Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power, Vivo Energy (a Vitol subsidiary that merged with Engen in 2024) and terminal operator VTTI for the development of a 1 GW to 1.8 GW CCGT power project and associated LNG import infrastructure in the port of Durban, in South Africa.
The US$3bn project, whose commissioning date remains to be specified, would align with South Africa's strategy to reduce reliance on coal-fired power plants, which still account for over 80% of power generation (85% in 2024).
