The US energy group Vistra has announced plans to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 60% by 2030 compared to a 2010 baseline and to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The group plans to close 7 Luminant coal-fired power plants totalling more than 6.8 GW of coal-fired capacity by 2027 in Illinois and Ohio (United States). The company plans to retire the 585 MW Edwards Power plant (Illinois) in 2022, the 1,185 MW Baldwin power plant (Illinois) and the 1,002 MW (plus 239 MW of gas-fired combustion turbines) Joppa power plant (Illinois) in 2025, the 1,108 MW Kincaid power plant (Illinois), the 1,020 MW Miami Fort power plant (Ohio), the 615 MW Newton power plant (Illinois ) and the 1,300 MW Zimmer power plant in 2027.
In addition, Vistra intends to invest US$850m on 6 solar projects (totalling 668 MW) and one 260 MW/260 MWh battery energy storage project in Texas, that will be commissioned in 2021 and 2022. The company is evaluating additional solar and battery projects, including more than 1,000 MW in Texas, more than 1,000 MW in California, and approximately 450 MW in Illinois under the Coal to Solar and Energy Storage Act.
Since 2016, Vistra and its subsidiaries have closed or announced the closure of 19 coal-fired power plants totalling more than 16,000 MW across the United States.
