Vistra closes acquisition of almost 5.5 GW of US gas-fired power capacity

The US energy group Vistra has completed the acquisition of Cogentrix Energy, adding 10 natural gas-fired power plants across eight US states (Vistra press release, 30/10/2026). The portfolio totals about 5,500 MW, and the deal closed after all required regulatory approvals were received.

The portfolio consists of 3,800 MW of CCGT capacity (881 MW Patriot and 881 MW Hamilton-Liberty in Pennsylvania, 286 MW Lakewood in New Jersey, 624 MW Newington in New Hampshire, 558 MW Bridgeport in Connecticut, 297 MW Tiverton in Rhode Island and 271 MW Rumford in Maine), 1,115 MW of combustion turbine capacity (740 MW Rock Springs in Maryland and 375 MW Ocean in New Jersey), and a 583 MW cogeneration power plant (Altura Cogeneration) in Texas. The projects are distributed across three markets: 3,163 MW in the PJM, 1750 MW in the ISO-NE and 583 MW at the ERCOT.

Besides acquiring 100% share from the plants, the company has also acquired a 25% interest in Patriot and Hamilton-Liberty that Cogentrix did not previously own. Deal value and financing are not disclosed. The acquisitions have increased Vistra’s portfolio to nearly 50 GW across natural gas, nuclear, coal, solar and battery storage.
