Vistra buys 5.5 GW of gas-fired generation capacity from Cogentrix (US)

US utility company Vistra has announced the acquisition of US-based Cogentrix Energy, indirectly owned by funds managed by the US private equity firm Quantum Capital Group, for approximately US$4bn. The transaction includes 10 gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of around 5.5 GW (Vistra press release, 5/01/2026).

According to Vistra’s announcement, the acquisition includes:

  • Three combined-cycle gas turbine facilities (Patriot, Hamilton- Liberty, Lakewood) and two combustion turbine facilities (Rock Springs, Ocean) totalling 3,163 MW in the PJM market.
  • Four combined-cycle gas turbine facilities totalling 1,750 MW in ISO New England (Newington, Bridgeport, Tiverton, Rumford)
  • One cogeneration facility in ERCOT (583 MW Altura Cogeneration).

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in mid-to-late 2026.
