Vietnam’s Vinacomin will increase coal production by 15% in 2023

Vietnam’s state-owned coal mining company Vinacomin has announced that it will increase its coal production by 15% for the year 2023 to supply the country’s power sector, as Vietnam is currently suffering power shortages amid very high temperatures. Vinacomin thus aims to produce 39.7 Mt of coal in 2023.

The company plans to supply about 18.7 Mt of coal to thermal power plants in the second half of 2023, after having supplied 21 Mt in the first half. In June 2023, Vinacomin will provide 30 kt of coal for the Thai Binh 1 thermal power plant and 20 kt for the Hai Phong thermal power plant. Meanwhile, it will deliver 300 kt of coal to Thai Binh 2 thermal power plant, higher than the contracted amount of 140 kt tonnes.

On the long-term, Vietnam aims to stop building new coal-fired power plants after 2030, and stop using coal for power generation after 2050.
