Vietnam's PVN connects the 1st unit of a 1.2 GW coal-fired project to the grid

The Vietnam oil and gas group PetroVietnam (PVN) has synchronised the first 600 MW unit of its 1,200 MW Thai Binh 2 coal-fired power project to the Vietnamese power system. The US$1.6bn project, which is located in the south of My Loc commune, Thai Thuy district, Thai Binh province, was built by a consortium of Toshiba Corporation, Sojitz Corporation and Daelim Industrial under an engineering, procurement and supply (EPS) contract worth $830m secured in May 2012. 

The country’s total capacity amounts to 70 GW (2020), including 22 GW of coal, 21 GW of hydroelectricity, 7.5 GW of gas, 2.5 GW of oil, and nearly 17 GW of solar PV. More than 22.5 GW are currently under construction, including 11 GW of coal, 6 GW of gas, 2 GW of hydro, 2 GW of solar and over 1 GW of wind.
