The People's Committee of Da Nang City in Vietnam has announced a renewable energy development plan to develop more than 1 GW of additional renewable energy capacity in the city during 2026-2030 (Vietnam Electricity Group, 21/08/2026).
Da Nang city is home to Vietnam's first free trade zone and under the plan, it targets the development of up to 373 MW of small hydropower, 300 MW of pumped-storage hydropower, 100 MW of utility-scale solar, 100 MW of rooftop solar, 100 MW of onshore and nearshore wind power, and 58 MW of biomass capacity. The city’s first facility is expected to enter operation in 2026-2027 and it intends to implement waste-to-energy projects.
The plan prioritises renewable energy deployment in industrial zones, economic zones and the Da Nang Free Trade Zone, while promoting direct power purchase agreements between renewable generators and large electricity consumers. Authorities also aim for around 50% of government buildings and 50% of households to install self-consumption rooftop solar systems by 2030.
Vietnam targets up to 73.4 GW of solar, 38 GW of onshore and nearshore wind, and 34.7 GW of hydropower capacity by 2030 under its latest power development plan (revised PDP VIII (April 2025)). For 2050, the PDP VIII aims to reach up to 296 GW of solar, up to 139 GW of offshore wind, up to 91 GW of onshore wind, and up to 41 GW of hydropower.
