Vietnam wants to build two nuclear plants by 2030

The Vietnamese government has directed two state-owned companies, Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and Vietnam Oil & Gas Group (Petrovietnam), to complete the construction of two nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuan province by the end of 2030. The plants, Ninh Thuan 1 and Ninh Thuan 2, each will have two reactors. EVN will invest in Ninh Thuan 1, while Petrovietnam will fund Ninh Thuan 2.

The government is working on updating the National Power Development Plan to include this project and is also amending the Law on Atomic Energy. Foreign partners will be selected for the project, and a working delegation will negotiate with them in February 2025.

A previous nuclear project in the area, approved in 2009, was halted in 2016 due to economic conditions, but the government has revived its nuclear energy plans to meet energy security and net-zero targets. The National Assembly recently approved restarting the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project.
