Vietnam unveils two proposed offshore wind projects (7 GW) off Ho Chi Minh City

The municipal Department of Industry and Trade of Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City has announced that two investors have proposed two offshore wind power projects totalling 7 GW, to be developed off the island district of Can Gio. Both projects are currently in the proposal and potential evaluation stage.

The first proposal is a cluster of offshore wind power plants in Can Gio with a total capacity of 1 GW, spanning the coastal areas of Ly Nhon and Long Hoa Communes and Can Thanh Town. The second proposal is a larger offshore wind project with a capacity of 6 GW, of which 4 GW will supply the national grid and 2 GW will be used for green hydrogen production after 2030.

In April 2024, Vietnam approved its Plan to implement the National Electricity Development Plan for the period 2021-2030, which aims to increase the onshore wind capacity to 21.9 GW and offshore wind capacity to 6 GW by 2030 (1.1 GW at end-2023). In February 2024, Vietnam also unveiled its hydrogen development strategy, under which the country plans to produce 100-500 kt/year of hydrogen by 2030 utilising renewable energy.
