Vietnam unveils strategy to produce up to 20 Mt/year of hydrogen by 2050

Vietnam has unveiled its hydrogen energy development strategy, under which the country plans to produce 100-500 kt/year of hydrogen by 2030 and 10-20 Mt/year by 2050, utilising both renewable energy and carbon capture technology.

The strategy is expected to displace some natural gas and coal used in power plants by 2030, with views for hydrogen to be used for transport, fertiliser, steel and cement. It is aimed at developing Vietnam’s hydrogen network across production, storage, transportation, distribution, domestic use and export. By 2050, Vietnam expects hydrogen will account for 10% of the country’s electricity generation.

Public and private funds will be used to support hydrogen production. Vietnam also notably plans to use offshore wind turbines to produce its intended volumes of hydrogen.

Vietnam plans to reach peak emissions by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050.
