Vietnam selects Vingroup to build a 750 MW nearshore wind project

The People’s Committee of central Gia Lai province (Vietnam) has selected Vinenergo, an affiliate of real estate conglomerate Vingroup, to build and operate Phase 1 (750 MW) of the Hon Trau nearshore wind project, requiring an investment of VND48,400bn (over USD1.9bn) (Vietnam News Agency, 05/02/2026). The project is designed to have a total installed capacity of 750 MW, with an electricity output of around 2.8 TWh/year. It will be connected to the national power grid at the 220 kV voltage level. Commissioning is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2029.

PNE, a German renewables firm, had bid for the project, along with another Vietnamese company, but was not selected (Reuters, 05/02/2026). Several international companies, including Equinor (Norway), Ørsted (Denmark), and Enel (Italy), have recently left the country, in a context where Vietnam is advancing a new growth strategy that favours national champions.

Vietnam aims to build 6,000 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2030-2035, starting from zero today, alongside up to 38,000 MW from onshore and nearshore projects.
