Vietnam scraps net metering scheme for rooftop solar projects

The Vietnamese government has changed the trading scheme for domestic rooftop solar projects and replaced the net metering system with a new consumption-direct supply method, which means that buyers of electricity will now directly pay for the electricity they receive from the sellers.

Until now, sellers of electricity produced from rooftop solar projects were required to sell it to purchasers based on the net metering method and if the amount of power was greater than the amount consumed by the seller, the surplus would be carried forward to the next trading cycle. At the end of the year or at the end of the contract, any surplus electricity would be sold at a specified price to the buyer.

With the introduction of the new scheme, buyers will now directly or separately pay for the amount of power they receive from rooftop solar project sellers and also need to pay directly for the electricity they receive and consume from the power grid.
