Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade has proposed a new revision of the country’s draft National Electricity Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050 (PDP8), which states that the total installed power capacity nationwide by 2030 is to reach 211.8 GW by 2030, an increase of 56.2 GW compared to the previous version of the PDP approved in 2023.
In this new revision of the PDP8, solar capacity is proposed to increase to 34 GW, an increase of more than 25 GW compared to the previous plan; this additional capacity accounts for around 45% of the total capacity expansion by 2030. In addition, pumped-storage hydropower and battery storage are also proposed to increase six-fold from 2.7 GW to 15.25 GW. Hydropower capacity would increase by about 5 GW, while onshore and nearshore wind capacity would rise by more than 7 GW. Meanwhile, imported power from China and Laos could triple to reach 14.6 GW.
In a previous announcement on the revision of the PDP8, the ministry had removed 6 GW of offshore wind power from the planning due to concerns about planning issues and implementation progress.
