Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Industry and Trade has unveiled a new proposed 6 GW offshore wind power project, located in Can Gio (southern Vietnam), and proposed to add the project to the country’s National Power Development Plan for 2021-2030 (PDP VIII), released in May 2023. The project will be developed by a joint venture between Vietnam’s Asia Petroleum Energy Corporation (Asiapetro) and Japanese firms Tokyo Gas and Shizen Energy Group.
The project will require an estimated investment of VND313,000bn (US$13.3bn) and will be developed in four phases. The project’s capacity is scheduled to reach 2 GW in the first phase (2031-2035), adding a further 1 GW in the second phase in 2035 for hydrogen production, 2 GW in the third phase (2036-2040) for power generation, and 1 GW in the fourth phase, once again for hydrogen production. Upon completion, the project’s power generation is expected to reach 24.5 TWh/year.
Vietnam currently does not have offshore wind capacity.
