Vietnam greenlights electricity development plan, focusing on gas and wind

The Government of Vietnam has approved the Plan to implement the National Electricity Development Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050. The plans aims to shift the country’s power system from fossil fuels to renewables, aligning with Vietnam’s net zero emissions target by 2050. However, most of the new capacity by 2030 is expected to come from thermal plants. Indeed, as part of the plan, the government intends to raise the domestic gas-fired capacity to 14.9 GW by 2030 and the LNG-fired capacity to 22.4 GW, compared to a total gas-fired capacity of 8.3 GW in 2022. In addition, the coal-fired capacity is expected to increase from 25 GW in 2022 to over 30 GW in 2030.

The government aims to increase the onshore wind capacity to 21.9 GW by 2030, compared to 3.5 GW in 2022. In addition, the offshore wind capacity should reach 6 GW, compared to 1.1 GW in 2022. Finally, the hydropower capacity would grow by over 7 GW to 29.3 GW in 2030, compared to 21.9 GW in 2022. The country also plans to import from 5 GW to 8 GW from Lao.

VIetnam's s total capacity amounted to 87.9 GW at end-2022.
