Vietnam fully commissions the Song Hau 1.2 GW coal-fired plant

The state-owned power utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the state-owned oil and gas company PetroVietnam (PVN) for the Song Hau coal-fired supercritical plant (2 x 600 MW) after the project was fully commissioned in April 2022. The plant, located in Hau Giang Industrial Park, Mai Dam town, Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang province, entered construction in 2015.

The country’s total capacity amounts to 69.8 GW (2020), including 20.8 GW of hydroelectricity, 21.6 GW of coal, 7.5 GW of gas, 2.5 GW of oil, and 16.7 GW of solar PV. More than 22.5 GW are currently under construction, including 10.6 GW of coal, 6.4 GW of gas, 2.3 GW of hydro, 2.2 GW of solar and 1.1 GW of wind.
