Vietnam commissions 420 MW Dau Tieng solar power plant

The 420 MW Dau Tieng solar power plant has been commissioned in Tan Chau District, Tay Ninh Province, around 100 km north of Ho Chi Minh City.

The VND 9.1tn (US$ 392.2m) project consists of two solar farms, the DT1 and DT2, spreading across more than 504 hectares of semi-submerged land and was developed by a joint venture between Vietnamese construction firm Xuan Cau and Thai conglomerate B.Grimm. A third unit (DT3) is slated for deployment between 2021 and 2025.

The solar farms were connected to the grid in June 2019 following more than ten months of construction. The project is expected to produce about 688 GWh of electricity per year, which will be sold to the state-owned power company Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) at a rate of VND2,086/kWh (roughly US$9c/kWh).

Solar currently accounts for less than 1% of Vietnam's total power output, but the government aims to reach a share of 3.3% by 2030 and 20% by 2050.
