Vietnam approves two floating solar plants totalling 450 MW

The local authorities of the Nghe An province (Vietnam) have authorised the construction of two floating solar projects on the Vuc Mau and Khe Go lakes in Quynh Luu district, totalling 450 MW of capacity. The Vuc Mau project, developed by Vuc Mau Solar Power Investment at a cost of VND3,700bn (US$160m) will have an installed capacity of 200 MW, while the Khe Go project proposed by Khe Go MK Solar Power at a cost of VND4,100bn (US$180m) will be rated 250 MW. Both are expected to complete legal procedures in December 2022 and to start construction in January 2023 with a targeted commissioning in December 2023. Power generation will be sold to the national power utility Electricity of Vietnam (EVN).

Vietnam’s total capacity reached 69.8 GW at the end of 2020, with 31% of coal, 30% of hydro, 24% of solar and 11% gas. More than 2.2 GW of solar capacity is under construction and 12 GW is under development.
