Vietnam approves Renewable Energy Development Strategy to 2030

The government of Vietnam has approved the Vietnam Renewable Energy Development Strategy to 2030 with outlook up to 2050, which aims to give priority to renewable energy, especially biomass, biogas, wind and solar, for energy and electricity uses. The country will promote onshore wind power until 2030 and study potential offshore developments as of 2030. Solar power development will be focused on islands, borders and remote areas where no electricity supply is possible.

Vietnam aims to raise hydropower generation from 56 TWh in 2015 to 90 TWh in 2020 and 96 TWh in 2030. Wind power generation is expected to increase from around 180 GWh in 2015 to 2.5 TWh by 2020 (accounting for 1% of total power generation in 2020), 16 TWh (2.7%) in 2030 and 53 TWh (5%) by 2050. Solar power generation should rise from about 10 GWh in 2015 to around 1.4 TWh (0.5% of the total power mix) in 2020, to 35 TWh (6%) in 2030 and to 210 TWh (20%) in 2050.

Vietnam will also bet on biomass and biogas, aiming to raise their consumption in industrial and agricultural plants from about 45% in 2015 to 50% in 2020, 60% in 2030 and 70% in 2050. The rate of breeding wastes used for power generation should also increase from 5% in 2015 to about 10% in 2020, 50% in 2030 and and nearly 100% in 2050.
